Anyone looking for a replacement for SmartFTP where the greedy bastards have started charging for their free product of over 10 years, should try FileZilla, an open source and free ftp client (they also do a free server too).
The link is http://filezilla-project.org/download.php?type=client
Well done guys – you certainly should get some more people downloading now, as I can’t see anyone paying for SmartFTP with a search of Google for an alternative!

I respect those that link to any of my blog posts, and if you leave your web site URL in the commenting system below, along with the URL of where you have linked to me, I will visit your site, and write a page of related content linking back to you. As you know, my blog has top search engine visibility (you got here), and pages of related and unique content with links back from me, can only do GREAT for your web sites search engine position.

Thank you, I tried filezilla a few years ago and it was far behind smartftp, however smartftp going from $0 to $36 is insane. Maybe a $5 donation or something but $36??? I will try filezilla again and hope they have some of those old bugs ironed out and I will never pay for smartftp.

Well, SmartFTP is still the best and their product is much cheaper than what the competitors are offering. They have been basically given a 50 USD product away for free for years. I’m happy to support them with my purchase. They also continue to improve the product. Look at the changelog at: http://www.smartftp.com/

Jim, SmartFTP can hardly be described as “THE BEST” – it does nothing the others don’t, and nothing that cannot be done in FileZilla or at a DOS Command Prompt.
Let face it FTP programs just login to web servers and transfer files on TCP/IP port 21, and chmod files – ALL OF THEM DO THAT including FileZilla, CuteFTP or the thousands of other alternatives.
Hence your charge has lost me – a career long user of SmartFTP.
End of argument – my blog turning up in the search engines, offering alternatives for your product (that you revoked my use of) has definitely lost you custom to FileZilla (you’d be surprised just how many I estimate from my web stats). Hence you are trying to justify your charge, and dump links on my blog (which you’ll notice I haven’t removed).
But let’s face it FREE Filezilla at http://filezilla-project.org verses your $29 comparible product – WHAT DOES THE GUY AT NO1 IN GOOGLE FOR “TIM INTERNET” (BEATING TWO NATIONAL PHONE COMPANYS’ OF THE SAME NAME, AND THE TIM THAT INVENTED THE INTERNET USE – HE USES FILEZILLA).
Nuff said!
